O for a few more Republican voices of reason like Chuck Hagel! If his party were dominated by persons like him rather than what it currently is, this country and the world would be far better off! Today's reactionary teabagger Republicans are really scraping the very bottom of the barrel.

The only "headless body" Arizonans need fear is that of their Governor. That woman, so reminiscent of Sarah Palin, is an idiot. She couldn't even read from prepared notes to tell viewers of that televised state debate the things she had supposedly accomplished! Her lack of preparation shows poor organizational ability at best, and a smug arrogance and cockiness toward the election and the voters of her state at worst. Her inability to think on her feet shows her to be not very bright or quick. Too bad this clip didn't show the "I have....(long pregnant pause) did all I can for Arizona." But her refusal to directly answer questions posed by the press afterward - the disdain she obviously has for the press and her flippant dismissal of them without answering the question posed - show that this woman is not worthy of the public trust and is wholly unsuited for public office of any kind, be it local, state, or national. This is a shocking revelation of her incompetence and inadequacy, and I certainly hope Arizona voters will respond accordingly.

In response to: Saying "I don't Know" to a Diaphanous God

Crème-commentateur,

Cordialement,

One of the amusing vagaries of our political process is that, occasionally, a dead man can run for office ... and win. Prime example: John Ashcroft versus Mel Carnahan, where Ashcroft earned the singular distinction of losing a race to a man who had been pushing up daisies for weeks.

You can't help but feel a tiny bit of sympathy for Ashcroft. That's got to be a spirit-breaker.

Clever and very punny last sentence! Kit Bond, like many conservatives, is a delusional paranoid. David Vitter is a dishonest crook. Both men make a mockery of our electoral process.

In response to: Undercover Lies and the Worldwide Bike Conspiracy

Jack Jodell [Visitor]

Politicians have been lying and exaggerating since the dawn of time. Regrettably, that has come to be an accepted fact. But the latest disturbing trend is for outside-the-campaign groups like the Swift Boat Liars, the various right wing groups opposed to the Obama health care plan, and now anti-tax groups to crawl out of the woodwork in election season and pollute the airwaves with the noxious stench of wild distortion, hyperbole, and blatant lying. The political action committees and shadowy groups are always funded by some very wealthy backers who have only their own interests, and not the common good, in mind. Public beware: if it sounds insane, it probably is, and there is undoubtedly an ulterior motive behind its presentation.

While reading this all I could really think is: Why does no one comment about brownies?

I am not sure how it relates, but I could not stop thinking about them while I read it, so there must be something there. If I were not so exhausted, I would not let this go. I would keep tugging at the string until something unraveled.

Very well stated. Glenn Beck is himself a perversion of common decency and common sense. I would agree with the Imam wholeheartedly. Radical narcissistic extremists like Beck, Palin, and Bachmann do nobody any lasting good.

The far-right, in its irrational and psychotic paranoia, has created a new Muslim bogeyman they want all others to fear too. They are recklessly and irresponsibly fanning the flames of hatred. We are entering a new age of darkness, deceit, and intolerance. It is up to the forces of light and reason - you, me, and other like-minded visitors to this blog - to actively combat and refute those who are attempting to spread this insane paranoia!

In response to: A Modern Racist

Manifesto Joe [Visitor]

I can appreciate the honesty of the commenter. I will add a few comments of my own.

Physical anthropologists, by the 1940s, had the benefit of cadaver dissection to tell the world that modern hominids are pretty close to the same, the world over. The differences are generally cosmetic, and then, of course, cultural. But it was found long ago that human brain capacity is, by and large, pretty much the same from one group to the next. All groups the world over have produced superior athletes and scholars as well.

I can see differences between men and women, but they seem quite qualitative rather than quantitative. It tends to come down to which attributes one considers more important.

The differences won't go away in coming centuries, but humans seem to have made big strides in recent decades as to understanding their nature. It's better to give any other human the benefit of any doubt. I'm larger and stronger than many other humans, but I wouldn't have to walk very far in any direction to find one who's bigger and stronger than I am, and of any description. I'm even smarter than the vast majority of other humans, according to the best tests we have. But having been a Mensan once, I found quickly that there are a few people out there who are more than a match for me in that department. And again, they come in all descriptions, and genders.

Tolerance is, by far, what makes the most sense. I hope that humanity trends in that direction in the foreseeable future.

Absolutely disgusting. What are we becoming? Looks like the paranoid conservatives in this country have found a new group to witch hunt and persecute. First it was African Americans, then communists, and new Muslims (or those who "look" like them).

We are still, when it's all said and done, human. And this is a very human failing. We'll make progress against it, but I don't know that we'll ever be totally rid of it. We can hope for that day and work towards it, but I fear that only the dead have seen the end of racism.

Jack Jodell [Visitor]
http://jackjodell.blogspot.com/

It is so hypocritical and paradoxical of us that our history is littered with episodes of racism and bigotry to this very day. We, who are supposedly the great melting pot and refuge from political and religious persecution elsewhere, have discriminated against Native Americans, Irish Catholics, African Americans, Chinese, Japanese, and now Hispanics and Muslims. Who is next?

I wish I had more time to comment. I agree with the last paragraph, as it is very well-expressed and merits my accord.

However, I want to point out that the racism toward Muslims that some people have was born of the repeated attacks carried out by those of Arabic descent in the name of religion. This origin bares little resemblance to racism toward blacks. While I agree that both are forms of racism, one is more forgivable and probably more fleeting than the other, as its basis is more solid, even if driven by fallacy.

I agree with the basic premise, the last paragraph, which is beautiful. I cannot, however, agree that racism is racism is racism. Now that is just plain ridiculous.
